The Ugly Truth About Self Care

Self-care is a popular buzzword these days. But what does it actually mean to take care of yourself?

I wrote this list of self-care tips to help you achieve optimal physical and mental health. Loving yourself is the most important thing you can do.

When you love yourself, you can extend that love to others.

Sleep, Eat, Exercise


Make sure you’re getting at least seven hours of sleep so you feel well-rested and better equipped to handle whatever life throws your way.

Proper nutrition plays a huge role in mood and long-term health as well. Make sure you break a sweat and move around each day.

Before you know it, you’ll look forward to your exercise routine.

Develop Healthy Hobbies


Engaging in your interests will bring you joy and inner harmony.

Whether it’s writing, hula-hooping, playing piano, painting, reading, gardening, there’s something out there for you.

Experiment with new hobbies and see which one resonates with you.

Go On Trips


Go on a vacation to get a change of scenery and learn about new cultures.

Anticipating a fun trip with friends or family can reduce stress dramatically. Get out in sunshine and explore a new place.

Develop Social Support


It is so important to be able to lean on loved ones during times of stress.

Everyone is different when it comes to the amount of social stimulation they desire each day, but make sure you carve out the time to develop deep relationships with people near you.

Be bold by asking your colleague to grab coffee or your neighbor to walk your dog with you.

Say “No”



Agreeing to do things that you do not really want to do will leave you feeling resentful and depleted.

Set firm boundaries for yourself. I’m sure there are some mandatory outings that you have to attend, but if you’re given a choice and you need time alone, then just say “no.”

I know it’s tough because you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but your feelings matter too!


These are a few ways to care for yourself, though there are plenty more!

Do whatever you have to do to preserve your emotional well-being so you can flourish in life.

Take some time to reflect, relax, and focus on yourself.
