Independence can bring a sense of joy, confidence, and accomplishment.
Imagine a world where you feel like you are your own boss.
You are in charge and can live life on your terms!
You don’t rely on anyone’s love, company, money, or resources and you’re up for the challenge of solving your own problems.
That will boost your self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
I put together four steps on how to achieve greater independence, and therefore a greater lifestyle.
4. Sit with Your Own Thoughts
Begin by getting to know yourself.
Sit down and think about who you are.
There are so many ways to do this - journaling, meditating, or simply sitting and reflecting on your core values.
Don’t just have a sketchy inkling of your identity, have a solid grasp.
You will begin to let go of unrealistic expectations as well as people who do not accept you as you are.
3. Make your own decisions
Once you understand who you are and what you want in life, you will begin to make your own choices.
Instead of running to ask your friends and family when you’re uncertain on what to do, you will find that clarity on your own.
You are the one that has to live with your choices, so you should be the final decision maker when it comes to important matters such as the city you want to live in, your life partner, and career.
Loved ones can influence you, but at the end of the day, your own choice is the one that counts.
2. Cope on Your Own
People might tell you that exercise helps them beat their blues.
Others might say journalism, painting, sitting by a palm tree, taking a steamy bubble bath, shopping for free samples of dark chocolate, or dancing to Beyoncé.
No one can figure out what lifts your spirits as well as you.
So get out there and try something! There are so many different coping skills.
Try a variety until you land on one that brings you a smile every time.
Also, don’t wait until you’re at a low point!
Discover what makes you happy before you sink to a dark place.
Being able to emotionally regulate without depending on others can only help you.
Who owns your car? You.
Who owns your apartment? You.
Phone bills, insurance, utility bills? You!
Take ownership of all your possessions and bills. Begin the transition to putting your own name down rather than letting your parents make the brunt of your payments.
You’re earning a steady income so it’s time to become financially independent.
It may seem daunting, but not having any financial ties to anyone is so liberating!
Being independent can be difficult. It’s not always easy to sit with your own intense thoughts, make important life decisions by yourself, cope on your own when you’re sad, and pay your own bills, but it will be worth it.
You will be living your best life when you’re unencumbered.
You’ll be able to maintain happiness, be free to spend money how you choose, and be whoever you want to be!
Chase after those goals.
